What is Menopause?
Menopause is a significant and natural part of a woman’s journey, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55, though it can happen earlier. It marks the end of the menstrual cycle as the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen.
For some women, this transition may happen quietly, with little to no symptoms, while for others, it can bring challenges like hot flashes, night sweats, or mood changes. These shifts often begin in the earlier stage called perimenopause and can last for some time.
Every woman’s experience with menopause is unique, and it’s a time that can feel overwhelming for many.

Perimenopause is the phase leading up to menopause, usually starting in your 40s and lasting 1 to 10 years. Hormone fluctuations, especially in estrogen, can cause symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and irregular periods. While fertility declines, pregnancy is still possible, so contraception is recommended until you’ve gone a year without a period if you're over 50, or two years if under 50. This phase can be a challenging transition that many women experience. Understanding the changes in your body can help you manage symptoms and approach this stage with more confidence.
Menopause marks the end of your menstrual cycles, typically around age 51, though it can occur between 45 and 55. It follows perimenopause, the transition before your final period, and is followed by postmenopause. If you haven’t had a period for 12 months, you’ve likely reached menopause.
Hormonal changes during this time can cause symptoms like hot flashes, mood shifts, and physical changes. Menopause is a unique experience for each woman and understanding the changes can help you navigate it with greater ease.
Postmenopause is the stage after menopause when your body adjusts to lower hormone levels. You may experience fewer symptoms, or some may continue for a while. It’s important to stay mindful of health risks like heart disease, osteoporosis, and weight gain, which can increase after menopause. Regular check-ups, such as bone health screenings, mammograms, and cervical tests, are essential. If you notice any abnormal bleeding or have concerns, speak with your GP. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help you manage these changes and support your overall well-being.
